Oleh Harkavyy (b. 1968): Kyrie (2002)

Kyrie Eleison, Lord, have mercy.
Christe Eleison, Christ, have mercy.
Kyrie Eleison, Lord, have mercy.

Leonel Power (d. 1445): Gloria from Missa “Alma redemptoris mater”

Glória Pátri, et Fílio,
et Spirítui Sáncto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper,
et in saécula saeculórum.
Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

Alma Mater/Ante Thorum
Benedicta es celorum regina
De spineto Nata Rosa

Alma mater / Ante thorum

Sung simultaneously:

Alma mater, digna virgula
ex styrpe regia nobili de lesse,
viri sancti veteri prosapia,
plaude, virgo, deo angelus;
carissima, humilitas docilis
te matrem domini fecit fieri.
Hee est que venit de libano
flos camps et nemorum
arborum pulcherima,
castissima domina suavis,
nunc mater miseris miserens.
Surge ad filium dominum nostrum,
impetra bravium propicium
pro culpa veteri in die memoranda.
Respice, clara virgo, filia David,
genitrix domini, regis eterni,
que sedes in solio splendido
gemmis floribus coronata,
ad hanc vallem flebilem,
ubi degent vesci famuli subditi
meditantes de gracia vestra solita,
supplicantes corde simplici
cum oracionum puris meditationibus,
memores nostri
effici dignemini
et post hanc finem
collocare nos in patriam glorie.

Ante Thorum
Ante thorum virginis
omnis milicia celica supernorum
beatorum civium
iugiter assistunt atque venerabili
splendida facie vestibus
decoris induta, venustissimis
assumpta, sedentem cum fillo adorant
cum notulis, modulis dulcissimis
et canticis, organis plurimis.
Que eya vale, genitrix domini,
virgoque gravida puerpera,
altissimum unicum,
parvulum tuum
lacte proprio fovisti virgineo.
Gaude quod te dicit Ysaie vaticinium
(parete, alete natum omnia regentem sydera,
super celico sidere
et aula pudicitie
manentem) et clausa
fertilis singulis languentibus
petentibus veram medelam atque tutelam
prebens prospicuos
sexumque femineum protegens,
supplicans unigenito filio
ut redemptos servulos
celesti reconciliet patrie.

English: Alma mater / Ante thorum

Kindly mother, worthy shoot
From the royal stem of noble Jesse,
From the ancient line of a holy man,
Rejoice, maiden, at the message from God ;
Most dear one, your humble submission
Has made you become the mother of the Lord.
This is she who comes from Lebanon,
The flower of the field and the most
Beautiful of the trees in the woods,
The most chaste and sweet lady, now a mother
Showing compassion to the wretched.
Rise, go to your son our Lord,
Obtain his pardon for mortals
For their ancient guilt on the Day of Judgment.
Look down, illustrious maiden, daughter of David,
Mother of the creator, the eternal King,
You that sit on a gleaming throne,
Crowned with jewels and flowers ;
Look down on this vale of tears,
Where your submissive servants lead their lives,
Reflecting on your accustomed kindness,
Beseeching you with simple hearts and
With the pure thoughts of their prayers ;
Deign to become mindful of us,
And after this life is over,
Place us in the homeland of glory.

Ante thorum

Before the throne of the Virgin
All the celestial army of the blessed
Citizens of heaven above
Take their stand,
And with august and radiant appearance,
Dressed in seemly robes and decked in their finest apparel,
They worship her, seated with her Son,
In musical notes, with the sweetest songs
And measures, with a host of instruments.
Hail, mother of the lord,
Boy-bearing maiden, heavy with child ;
The one most high,
Your little baby,
You nourished with your maiden's milk.
Rejoice that it is you that Isaiah names
( give birth, rear a son who will reign over all the stars,
who will dwell above the firmament of the sky,
and in the palace of chastity)
and you , who were fertile though untouched,
give true healing and protection
to each weary one who seeks your help ;
protect the female sex,
and pray to your only-begotten son
that he may restore your redeemed
servants to the heavenly home.

Benedicta es celorum

Benedicta
es celorum regina
et mundi totius domina
et egris medicina.

Tu preclara
maris stella vocaris
que solem iustitie paris
a quo illuminaris.

Te dens pater
ut dei mater
fieres et ipse frater
cuius eras filia

Sanctificavit,
sanctam servavit
et mittens sic salutavit
Ave plena gratia_.

Per illud _Ave_ prolatum
et tuum responsum gratum
est ex te verbum incarnatum
quo salvantur omnia.

Nunc mater exora natum
ut nostrum tollat reatum
et regnum det nobis paratum
in celesti patria.

English: Benedicta es celorum

Blessed are you, Queen of Heaven,
Mistress of the whole world ,
And medicine to the sick.

You are called the bright Star of the Ocean ;
You gave birth to the sun of righteousness,
By whom you are given your radiance.

You were made holy by God the Father,
That you might become the Mother of God,
And by that kinsman himself, whose daughter you were ;
And He kept you holy, and sending His messenger greeted you thus :
" Hail, full of grace! "

By that "Ave" offered,
And by your accepting reply,
The Word was born from your flesh,
By which all things are saved.

Now, o mother, pray to your Son,
That he may lift our condemnation,
And grant us the kingdom prepared for us,
In the heavenly country.

De spineto nata rosa
De spineto nata rosa
arbor vite preciosa
ave plena gratia,
Nos ad lucem vere lucis
levans trahis et perducis
ducens via regia.

Specialis eminenter
singularis excellenter
emines virtutibus.
Flos et lumen es sanctorum
sed et ipsis angelorum
premines ordinibus.

Aaron virga tu fuisti,
florem fructu protulisti
stupendo miraculo. 15
Deum paris illibata
post et ante sigillata
veri regis anulo.

Ergo virgo tam beata
multis signis premonstrata
sis nobis propicia.
Aufer iras et langores,
mentem munda, forma mores
pietatis gratia.

Pie matris pia proles,
hic purgatos quando voles
transfer nos ad supera.
Pie matris pia prece,
tu nos a secunda nece
pie Ihesu libera.

English: De spineto nata rosa
Rose born from a thorn bush,
Precious tree of life,
Hail to you , that are full of grace ;
You raise us up and draw us
Towards the light of true light ;
You escort us to our goal,
Leading us by the royal road.

Outstanding above all creation,
Uniquely surpassing every other,
You are supreme in all the virtues.
You are the flower and light of the saints,
But you even excel the very ranks of angels.

You were the rod of Aaron,
You brought forth foliage,
Flourishing by an astounding miracle.
You gave birth to God while still unsullied,
Testified before and after
By the true King's seal.

Therefore, maiden so blessed,
Foretold by so many signs,
May you be favourable to us.
Take away our anger and weakness,
Cleanse our minds, and shape our natures,
For the sake of your holiness.

O holy child of a holy mother,
When it is your will, take us ,
Who have been cleansed here,
To the regions above.
By the holy prayer of a holy mother,
Set us free, holy Jesus,
From the second death.

Anonymous (England, 14th c.): Dou way Robyn/Sancta Mater

Sancta mater gratiae, stella claritatis
visita nos hodie plena pietatis.

Veni, vena veniae mox incarceratis,
solamen angustiae, fons suavitatis.

Recordare, mater Christi, quam amare tu flevisti;
juxta crucem tu stetisti, suspirando viso tristi

O, Maria, flos regalis, inter omnes nulla talis;
Tuo nato specialis nostrae carnis parce malis

O, quam corde supplici locuta fuisti,
Gabrielis nunci i cum verba cepisti.

’En ancilla Domini’, propere dixisti;
vernum vivi gaudii post hoc perperisti.

Gaude, digna, tam benigna caeli solio;
tuos natos, morbo stratos, redde filio.

Dou way, Robyn, the child wile weepe; dou way Robyn.

Transl.

Holy mother of grace, star of brightness,
visit us today, full of compassion.

Come soon, channel of pardon, to those in prison,
as a solace of misery, a source of sweetness.

Remember, mother of Christ, how bitterly thou didst weep;
thou didst stand beside the cross sighing at the sad sight.

O Mary, royal flower, among all women nonesuch,
in thy son unequalled, forgive the sins of our flesh.

O, with how humble a heart thou didst speak
when thou didst receive the words of Gabriel the messenger.

’Behold the handmaid of the Lord’, thou didst quickly say;
thereafter thou didst bear the springtime of living joy.

Rejoice, worthy lady, so gracious, in the throne of heaven;
restore thy children, brought low by vice, to the Son.

Stop it, Robin, the child will weep; stop it, Robin.

Andrew Smith (b. 1970): Ave Maria (2000)

Ave, Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus
et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus.
Sancta Maria, mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
Ave Maria, gratia plena, ora pro nobis.
Maria, Maria, Maria, ora pro nobis. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
You are blessed among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and in the hour of our death.
Hail Mary, full of grace, pray for us.
Mary, Mary, Mary, pray for us. Amen.

After one of the most well-known male folksingers of Norway, Sondre Brattland; as sung in Tuddal in the county of Telemark.

and the evening spreads out onto the earth.
Little birds settle in their nests,
the flowers are closing,
as is my heart,
secretly closing in prayer.
