Altramar
APRIL 12, 1998

Spring has always been a season of mystery and rebirth -- almost from the beginning of time. Celebrate the coming spring as Saint Paul Sunday welcomes Altramar, an ensemble specializing in music of Medieval Europe. Using the styles and instruments of the time, they'll perform a hymn by Hildegard of Bingen, a sung prayer of Jewish Spain, and works from ancient Italian and French sources. Altramar has recaptured the unique character and ecstasy of their chosen repertoire. Listen in and celebrate the Easter and Passover seasons with them this week on Saint Paul Sunday.

The Mendelssohn String Quartet with violinist Robert Mann
APRIL 19, 1998

Youthful virtuosity meets inveterate mastery this week on Saint Paul Sunday when the Mendelssohn String Quartet performs with violinist Robert Mann, a founding member of the Juilliard String Quartet. The combined ensemble will play Felix Mendelssohn's powerful opus 87 Viola Quintet in B Flat Major - a work that displays an astonishing range of colors, themes, and feelings. The quartet alone will also play Haydn's Quartet in D Major, Opus 20, No. 4.

There's a familial aspect to this week's program too: Robert Mann's son Nicholas is a violinist in the quartet, and the two share a little banter.

The Assad Duo: Sérgio and Odair Assad, guitars
APRIL 26, 1998

"I believe we were always meant to be a team - right from the first time we picked up our guitars. We began playing guitar at exactly the same time, we always studied with the same teachers and learned the same music and technique. Such interaction can only happen with brothers... we shared every aspect of our musical education together."

These are the words of guitarist Sérgio Assad, who visits Saint Paul Sunday this week with his brother Odair. The Brazilian-born duo will present a vibrant sound-portrait of South America through its most celebrated instrument - works by Astor Piazzolla, Egberto Gismonti, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Sérgio himself. The near-telepathic artistry these brothers share has won them a devoted worldwide following. Discover why for yourself this week on Saint Paul Sunday.
